Rez Mani (Ph.D)

Scientist (R&D)

Ph.D in Earth and space science, specialized in satellite optical instrumentation, from York University in Toronto. He also holds an M.Eng in engineering physics,  specialized in optical properties of semiconductors, from McMaster University in Hamilton. In 2011, following 10 years as an optical scientist, during which he contributed and led a number of optical/laser/spectroscopic projects, Dr. Mani returned to York University as a contract faculty member and research associate. He is a consultant for Allied Scientific Pro since 2011 and an Application Scientist with the company since 2017.

This webinar, will focus on the benefits of near IR spectroscopy compared to mid-IR spectroscopy methods. While fundamental absorption bands exist in the mid-IR region, weaker overtones can be found in the near IR region. Several industries are now turning to near IR spectroscopy for quality control since it offers a faster and more inexpensive method, using light-weight portable spectrometers, compared to the more expensive and bulky mid-IR instruments like FTIR. Near-IR can be used in many varied applications, including: finding components of food and drugs, sorting plastics for recycling, detecting viruses in nasal fluid or mosquitoes, finding polyester contents of fabrics, and so on. A new method called Digital Light Processing (DLP) uses micro-mirrors to sequentially shine different parts of the spectrum onto a single element detector and builds the spectrum. This promising technology offers an alternative to the use of an array detector, which is more expensive. We will also discuss the usage of chemo-metrics methods such as Partial Least Square (PLS) to make quantitative predictions and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) for sorting.
